Amazing: Stop Motion Engine Rebuild

Here’s a little edutainment for a scorching Saturday afternoon: One of the most incredible car-related videos I’ve seen. As much as we admire guys who meticulously chronicle their restoration or upgrade project, the builder of this Triumph Spitfire engine is on a whole other level, stringing 3,000 pictures together into a 2-and-a-half minute snapshot of his project.

One of the best things about the clip is the fact that’s it’s informative as well. Any seasoned shadetree mechanic has at least a basic understanding of the major jobs that go into rebuilding an engine, but there’s something about seeing the whole process packaged, as it were, into a bite-size morsel that helps bring the endeavor into perspective. As different as it is from my own restoration project, I have a feeling I’ll be coming back to the clip for inspiration more than once.

Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the first post of this blog! My first entry was a little blurb about the then-new BMW M3 CRT in which I blasted the Bavarian automaker for charging a substantial markup over a standard M3 for what I considered to be nothing more than a mild appearance package and a few other baubles and bolt-ons.

Having had a reasonably consistent succession of “strong opinions” about car-related matters, I thought it would be worthwhile, if not “therapeutic” for me, to develop an outlet of sorts, some place where they could be safely expressed and duly quarantined. Thus was born Spannerhead in late June 2011.

So far, not counting my “Headlights” entries (during the time when that site feature was operational; it may return), I’ve written 279 posts on a wide variety of topics; indeed, a quick glance at the “Categories” pulldown at right indicates I’ve covered a huge swath of automakers and subjects. Some of my most satisfying posts have been parts of various series I’ve started, including:

All in all, it’s been a great, if occasionally stressful experience. Onward!

The Aesthetics of Racing: Toyota GT-One

With respect to what it set out to do—secure a 24 Hours of Le Mans victory for manufacturer Toyota—the GT-One was a miserable failure. Aesthetically, however, it’s a fascinating car, especially from a Japanese outfit.

Purpose-built to conquer Le Mans, the GT-One nestled into the then-top-tier GT1 class in ’98, and the GTP class in ’99, the shift necessitated by a regulation change that required more roadgoing examples built in order to homologate a car for the highest-level class, an effort Toyota was unwilling to put forth. Although its twin-turbo 3.6l V8 and Dallara-developed chassis gave the GT-One a competitive turn of speed, it was let down by mechanical failures, tire disintegrations and just plain bad luck (read: collisions initiated by other racers). Even with the enormous resources of the Japanese giant, the car could finish no better than 25 laps back of the winning Porsche 911 GT1 in ’98. It did manage to hold on to second place overall in ’99, but that achievement was tempered by the fact that it was running in a class by itself, the other race cars having to abide by slightly more stringent rules.

In spite of its lack of success around the Circuit de la Sarthe, I’m fascinated by, if not necessarily drawn to, its looks. Perhaps the most arresting aspect of its lines are their utter organic-ness. To generalize, even when incorporating sweeping, curved shapes, Japanese-sourced styling isn’t known for being the most romantic, as it were. But on a race car, no less, where form should be fully subservient to function, the GT-One’s shape looks downright fanciful. Examine the gothic curve of the nose cone, check out the insectoid headlight clusters and the rippling expanse of bodywork aft of the cockpit, terminating in a full-width ducktail and baroque spoiler. Looking so much like an idle concept exercise, I couldn’t believe Toyota had actually raced one “in anger” when I first beheld it (admittedly, in the video game Gran Turismo 2). They deserve recognition for creating a car so distinctive, if not successful.

FWD Champions: The P10 Infiniti G20

Early Infiniti cars have been given short shrift by automotive enthusiasts. I’ve written articles on the underrated first generations of the Q45 and M45, and today’s car—the first gen “P10” Infiniti G20—also falls into the overlooked-yet-excellent category, in spite of the fact that its front wheels do the pulling.

A rebadged version of the Japanese-market-only Nissan Primera, the ’91-’96 G20 is blessed with fundamental goodness in two key areas: its engine and front suspension. The engine is the same brilliant 2.0l, 140-hp SR20DE 4-cyl fitted to Nissan’s contemporary Sentra SE-R, a rev-happy, robust, smooth and torquey powerplant, one of the all-time greats. Regarding the front suspension, Popular Science wrote in a period review:

It uses a variation of the Nissan 300ZX multi-link front suspension, adapted for the first time to accept a front-wheel-drive power train. It is a complex but compact system, and it works like magic with the conventional strut-and-link rear setup to provide a combination of accurate steering, wheel control, and ride quality. In short, it’s tremendous fun to drive quickly.

Coupled with a commendably low curb weight of just over 2850 lbs, the G20 delivered 0-60 times in the mid-8 second range—not smoking fast by any stretch, but respectable for the era—along with grin-inducing, tossable handling enabled by the suspension design noted above. All told, the car’s tautness and verve gives it a very European feel for something originating from Japan.

In spite of its engine and chassis brilliance, one glance at the utterly, completely bland and featureless styling renders moot the question of why the P10 G20 is frequently overlooked. Even for the early ’90s, a period that saw dozens of vanilla-ish cars flood the market, the first-gen G20’s design is particularly inert. Especially considering it was then-brand-new Infiniti’s first crack at an entry-level car, they might have been better served to have drawn a shape with a bit more splash. But for those who prioritize mechanical and dynamic excellence over the appearance of it, the first-gen G20 is worth checking out.

Datsun 240Z Restoration: The Bad News

This is where I get depressed. Or overwhelmed. Take your pick.

The video above represents a brief walkaround of the Z, and touches on many of the issues to be addressed in the restoration, including the visible rust and some interior problems.

It’s…daunting, to say the least. I posted the video on a reputable Z-car forum and while most of them agree it’s salvageable, the process will invariably entail a significant amount of time, effort and money. No less a mainstay of the Z community as Carl Beck chimed in with figures of 650 hours and $30,000, though admittedly, those were his numbers for this concours-quality restoration. I don’t want a show car, just something clean and completely rust free in which I can have fun on the weekends. The Z obviously won’t see a snowflake ever again, and if I can help it, nary a raindrop either. So that figure could potentially be revised downward, but…it’s still enough to cause sticker shock. I’ll have a better handle on the real figure in a couple of months when I start disassembling the car and all the hidden rust comes to light. Onward…

Are Cars Objectively
or Relatively Beautiful?

Would a Neanderthal drool over your pristine ’79 El Camino?

In other words, do cars hold an intrinsic aesthetic appeal, or are they simply good-looking compared to other cars?

Imagine you’re a denizen of, say, the mid-1800s. You’ve obviously never seen a car before, and via the wonders of time travel, the Aston Martin DB9 pictured above appears in front of you. After overcoming your initial shock and awe, you pause for a moment to contemplate its aesthetic merit. Knowing nothing about its modus operandi, would you consider it an attractive shape? Or does an otherwise pleasing form like the DB9’s require a sort of “automotive context” in order to be deemed beautiful?

See, I believe humans are hard-wired with certain aesthetic predispositions. Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder—but within a limited range. After all, almost everyone considers a vibrant sunset, a sleek and stately race horse, the starry night sky or a balletic hummingbird beautiful. And within the confines of our respective genders (with some exceptions), men are drawn to an attractive female shape, and vice versa. Those predispositions transcend personality; even someone with absolutely no visual taste in any other arena can recognize basic beauty when they see it.

Technology can be beautiful. Consider the Golden Gate Bridge, the Taj Mahal or Concorde: Someone calling any one of those unattractive would be far and away the exception rather than the rule, no matter their preferences in other areas or cultural biases.

But cars? A common thread between the examples of beautiful technology listed above is that their method of working informs their shape. When considering a car, though, there’s no innate indication as to what makes it go; from where it derives its motivation. Put another way, when looking at one, it’s distressingly easy to suppress learned knowledge of what propels it and simply see it as a metal box with four wheels. A visitor from an earlier time, without having lived in modern society and having no prejudices or prior knowledge of cars, would behold one exactly that way—something impossible for the other examples of beautiful technology listed above. To our transplant from the 1800s, the form of the Golden Gate Bridge dovetails perfectly with its function, the Taj Mahal communicates majesty in and of itself, and Concorde positively radiates “fast, winged flight.” They don’t require a context; they stand alone.

So as much as it pains me to postulate it, I believe automotive aesthetic appeal falls into the relative category. The shapes we admire so much, like the DB9’s, aren’t timeless, as much as they stand out from their peers in the present and immediate future.

Learning To Drive Stick, Part I

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to teach my wife how to drive a stickshift.

The endeavor was borne out of necessity as much as any other reason; there have been more than a few times I’ve had to take the BMW when it would have been much more convenient to drive the minivan, because my wife couldn’t drive a 5-speed. And supposing I was driving the minivan and had an accident, my wife would need to at least have some basic knowledge of how to operate a manual transmission in order to be able to come to me.

She recognized those reasons too, and she’s always loved the BMW, so she was eager to learn how to drive it. Through the years, I’d given a couple of folks quick lessons in the basics, so I had a rough idea of how to approach it:

  1. Find a semi-secluded, completely open parking lot.
  2. Explain the basics of what the clutch pedal and gearshift actually do using a simple diagram, but don’t overwhelm with technical details.
  3. Practice starting off without the aid of the gas pedal in order to develop a feel for where the clutch takes up.
  4. Progress to 1-2 and 2-3 gear changes once the fundamentals of starting out are established.

And over the course of 45 minutes or so, that’s exactly what we did. She killed the car at least a dozen times, but that’s wholly expected for someone just learning the ropes. I was proud of her for always remembering to push in the clutch pedal when restarting the car; new stickshift initiates can easily forget that requirement in the midst of the other half-dozen things they need to remember to do (but are second nature to those of us who’ve been driving stick for years).

I’m most nervous about hill starts. We won’t tackle those until the next lesson or two. When I first learned to drive stick at age 17, hill starts scared me, and I still feel a slight twinge of anxiety when called upon to perform one nowadays, just knowing that a stall or worse, backing into the car behind me, is just a slip of a pedal away. All in good time.

Datsun 240Z Restoration: On The Road

Note: The “thoroughly depressed” line at the beginning references another series of clips I shot right before the drive, inventorying many of the car’s “trouble areas.” That video will be featured in a future post in this series.

So, after working like a crazy person getting the driveline reassembled on Monday, the needed brake bridge didn’t arrive until Wednesday, leaving me with hours to install it, bleed the hydraulic and work out what bugs I could via a few test drives that evening, in order to confirm the car was at least passably roadworthy for the following morning, when I drove my son to school in the Z for his last day of 1st grade.

And aside from mushy brakes (investigation still underway) and mysterious timing problems (solution TBD), the car performed like a champ, and he greatly enjoyed his ~2 mile drive to school.

So what’s the plan now, since I’ve gotten it running again? Enjoy it for a bit, while fixing the remaining running issues. In the meantime, I’ll tackle additional home projects, make time for family activities over the summer, and prepare the garage for the teardown. Even after completing the perimeter storage system, there’s still quite a bit to be done:

  • Cut back the castering work table to make room for the table saw and eventual purchase of a tool chest
  • Build a hanging shelf in the center of the garage for doors, fenders, hood, and other large car pieces
  • Score a parts cleaning tank and possibly a media blasting cabinet

Among other things. So there’s still a long way to go. But the memory of how it feels to row through the gears and haw at the thin wooden steering wheel is fresh, and motivating.

2012 Champion Porsche 911 Turbo RSR:

Funny thing about the Porsche 911—whether on the street or on the track, it always seems like the “good guy.” Yes, its mechanical configuration is unorthodox, and its owners snooty from time to time, but competing against a reckless Ferrari or headstrong BMW, the 911 is always (if you’ll pardon the non-Teutonic analogy) the Captain America of the bunch—the forthright, unflappable do-gooder in a crowd of capable misfits.

Until this 911.

Car and Driver‘s July 2012 feature story on the 2012 Champion Motorsport 911 Turbo RSR, internally known as the CMSP-38, bills the car as “the coolest 911 ever.” I’d choose a different adjective: Evil.

The price certainly is. Prepare to shell out near-as-makes-no-difference $400K for the privilege of parking one in your garage, on top of which get ready to fork over additional suitcases of Benjamins as track days—the CMSP-38’s natural habitat—consume tires and pricey specialty Porsche bits.

Which isn’t to say the car can’t be driven on the street—it can, and quite pleasantly, but as the C&D article makes clear, the objective performance numbers—640 hp, 0-60 in 2.7—while properly stratospheric, aren’t distinct enough from the plebeian 911 Turbo S’s to warrant the additional cash for bragging rights alone. No, the intent behind Champion Motorsport’s wide body, aero and track-centric modifications is to make those kinds of numbers much more usable. It’s one thing if you’ve got Roger Federer’s “liquid whip” forehand; it’s phenomenal if you can hit that forehand from anywhere on the court. Giving the performance numbers that kind of mobility is what Champion has achieved with the CMSP-38.

And then they decided to offer all that unheard-of performance bandwidth in a wrapper that looks like it would just as soon rip your face off as shake your hand. Behold the duality of the Champion 911 RSR: The German equivalent of the Batmobile; the heart of gold ensconced in a menacing shape; lethal force harnessed in the service of what’s right, in this case going very, very fast around a race track. Evil—controlled.
